Question 1387: Cats and dogs

Juroon is an important pre-wedding ceremony native to the Indian state of Assam. During this ceremony the groom’s mother gifts the bride with lots of presents. This ceremony is an exclusive women affair, though some men may be present.

A special canopy structure, called ‘morol,’ is built for the occasion using banana or mango leaves. On the day of the ceremony, the groom’s mother along with other female relatives visits the bride’s home. They are greeted by the bride’s mother, following which they are lead to the morol. The bride is summoned and asked to sit in front of the morol. She is gifted with presents by her future mother-in-law and other members of the groom’s family. The groom’s mother applies a ‘sindoor’ (vermillion powder) on the bride’s forehead while gifting her.

What is so unique about this ceremony only practiced  in Assam?

Answer: The answer I was looking for was that it is the only known Indian practice which mirrors the Western tradition of "Bridal shower".

Unlike others where groom family has to be gifted in axomiya culture there is a bride price aka juroon, da bride has to leave her home wearing cloth given by groom's family.

da bride has to be gifted...not da groom??unlike everywhere else where da groom gets da moolah...kind of a reverse dowry???

Maybe the only major tradition in the country which has the bride at the receiving end of gifts..kind of anti-dowry.
