Question 1361: War & Peace

Following list shows various code-names adopted for certain war-time activity 'X'.

1. British Army: 'Boniface' (X as Forecaster of good future; benefactor)
2. U.S. Army against Japan: 'Magic' (mysterious and powerful nature of X)
3. British Military against Germany: Y (referring to X's 'most secret' nature)

'Y' eventually became the standard designation among western allies in WWII. As is evident the name 'Y' arose because it was considered most important than that designated as highest by British services.

Winston Churchill famously remarked "It was thanks to Y that we won the war."
