Question 382
On 4 May 1951, a Sir Hugh Beaver went on a shooting party in North Slob, by the River Slaney in County Wexford, Ireland. He became involved in an argument over which was the fastest game bird in Europe, the koshin golden plover or the grouse. That evening at Castlebridge House he realized that it was impossible to confirm in reference books whether or not the golden plover was Europe's fastest game bird.Beaver thought that there must be numerous other questions debated nightly in pubs in Britain and Ireland, but there was nothing with which such arguments could be settled. He realized then that something supplying the answers to this sort of question might prove popular. What followed?

Question 379
Geometrically, the 'X' shape can be regarded as (the area inside of) an irregular icosagon or 20-sided polygon. The proportions of were fixed based on a 5x5 diagonal grid.
Characteristic is the 90° rotational symmetry (that is, the symmetry of the cyclic group C4h) and chirality, hence the absence of reflectional symmetry, and the existence of two versions of 'X' that are each other's mirror image.
The mirror-image forms are often described as:
clockwise and counterclockwise;
left-facing and right-facing;
left-hand and right-hand.
An explanation for 'X' origin is suggested by Carl Sagan in his book Comet, proposing that the symbol was inspired by a comet approaching Earth closely enough that the jets of gas streaming from it, bent by the comet's rotation, became visible. This explanation has found some adherents among catastrophists. What is 'X'?

Question 350
X wrote about this event in his diary:
".....I was sitting writing in my textbook, but the work did not progress; my thoughts were elsewhere. I turned my chair to the fire and dozed. Again the atoms were gamboling before my eyes. This time the smaller groups kept modestly in the background. My mental eye, rendered more acute by the repeated visions of the kind, could not distinguish larger structures of manifold combination; long rows sometimes more closely fitted together all twining and twisting in snake-like motion. But look! What was that? One of the ______ had seized hold of its own tail, and the form whirled mockingly before my eyes. As if by a flash of lightning I awoke, and this time also i spent the rest of the night in working out the consequences of the hypothesis."
