Question 1285

Connect image 1 and 2 to a certain person X,  and put complete funda regarding X's thesis which related 1 to 2. (No need to identify the individual images)

1

2

Answer: 1. Angraecum sesquipedale(Darwin's Orchid)
2. Xanthopan morgani The connect is Charles Darwin. The orchid, endemic to Madagascar, was first discovered in 1798. It is noteworthy for its long spur and its association with the naturalist Charles Darwin who surmised that the flower was pollinated by a then undiscovered moth with a proboscis whose length was then unprecedented. His prediction had gone unverified until 21 years after his death when the moth was discovered and his conjecture vindicated. The story of its postulated pollinator has come to be seen as one of the celebrated predictions of the theory of evolution.

Darwin said something like the flower was pollinated by an insect with a very long sting (?).It had something to do with his theory of evolution , I think.

2nd pic is of Angraecum Sesquipedale or Darwin's child. Darwin predicted that the plant had been pollinated by a moth with a proboscis of seemingly impossible length(20-35 cm). No such moth was believed to exist until it was discovered some 21 years after Darwin's death. It was named Xanthopan Morgani(praedicta)which is the 1st pic and Darwin's predictions came to be true. It is one of the best inferences supporting his theory of evolution. Sorry for the length of the comment not unlike the proboscis of the moth but it fascinates me.
