Question 1353: Friends with benefits

'X' & 'Y', both popular musicians of their times, are also famous for the close association they shared and the influence they had on each other's music. Coming in contact through the band "The Byrds" in the 1960's, the association lead to the peculiar record of the song "Norwegian Wood (The bird has flown)" paving way for the raga rock trend in western music.

X's association with 'Y' greatly increased X's popularity and Ken Hunt of Allmusic stated that 'X' had become "the most famous Indian musician on the planet" by 1966. 'Y' is also known to have visited 'X' in Srinagar for lessons during which a documentary film about 'X' was shot by Howard Worth and released in 1971. In 1967, The Beatles won the Grammy Award for The Album of the Year for Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band which included a song by 'Y' that was influenced by Indian classical music of 'X'.

The two also worked for a concert aimed at raising international awareness and fund relief for Bangladesh in 1971 and an album 'X- Family & Friends' in 1973. 'X' and his family also performed in 2002 for a concert organised in memory of 'Y'.
