Question 1051: Lengthy roads

Who is the guy lying down? And what's happening?

Answer: Oliver Smoot who was used to measure the length of the Harvard Bridge and gave rise to the non standard unit Smoot = 5'7''(his height at the time). The bridge was measured to be 364.4 smoots +/- 1 ear. Ironically, Oliver Smoot went on to become President of International Organisation for Standardisation.
